Shen Shian didn’t go to the restaurant, but Li Cheng decided to join the cleaning team this time. “Mr. Zhang said there must be a lot of materials in the restaurant. I want to go in and try my luck.”
Shen Shian advised twice without success and could only remind him to be careful.
“Mr. Shen, you can be rest assured. There are a lot of people this time, and some of the people who stayed behind have joined.” said Li Cheng with a smile. “And I am not inexperienced. I had already solved over 30 zombies.” If there are many supplies in the restaurant, he could give some to Mr. Shen.
As for rich man Miao, like Shen Shian, he refused Zhang Ze’s proposal. He talked with Shen Shian privately, “People like Zhang Ze belong to the type of business that I am most unwilling to deal with. On the surface he is smiling. In the back, he stabs you. Typical case of a two faced person.”
However, regardless of whether he and Shen Shian were going, three days later, on April 17, the people that have decided to participate in going to the restaurant gathered as scheduled.
Shen Shian felt a little uneasy in his mind, but when he found that the oval-faced man was also participating, this uneasiness became more and more intense. It was already too late to think about it so he gave his thorn stick to Li Cheng. “Use this. Remember, be careful. If you find something wrong, run back immediately. I will help you.”
Li Cheng grinned out two rows of white teeth and replied, “En.”
At nine o’clock in the morning, the three glass doors to the wooden bridge were forcibly unlocked, and the cleaning team that has been divided into three groups went in.
Ten minutes later, the crowd disappeared under the cover of green vines.
Things seemed to go much smoother than Shen Shian imagined, because after less than two hours, the cleaning team returned to the first floor lobby along the wooden bridge, and everyone returned with a full load.
No one was injured, and only one member was missing from the team.
In the cheers of the left-behind, most of the members were proud, but a small number of people turned pale. When they returned to the lobby, they rushed to the bathroom with their mouths covered, including Li Cheng.
It took Shen Shian and rich man Miao nearly an hour to piece together the truth of the cleanup operation from his mouth.
The cleaning team had been divided into three groups. When one of the team reached one of the three entrances of the restaurant, the members of the group suddenly united, pressing another member of the group to the ground and tied him with a rope. They then cut a hole in his leg, and shoved his lower body through the entrance gap.
“T-t-the door of the restaurant was locked with an iron chain,” Li Cheng leaned against the cubicle in the bathroom, his face was pale due to prolonged vomiting, his fingertips could not help but tremble violently and he tightened his fingers. “The gap in the middle could just fit a person’s lower body, but the upper body was stuck outside. Inside are all zombies, smelling blood, and they all came around.”
The oval-face became a living target and all the zombies were led to the entrance. There were few critical points in the lower body, and even if he was bitten by a zombie, he would not die immediately. However, due to the evolution of the zombies, at least one or two hours after a survivor was infected with the virus, they will completely lose consciousness.
Li Cheng’s face was full of tears, “Brother Shen, brother Miao, I was right across from them. I saw it all. He tried to climb out, but the others blocked him. Those zombies… those zombies dragged his legs, and bones. He screamed so much.”
Shen Shian’s eyes dimmed, “Why didn’t I heard his scream?”
“One of the team members blocked his mouth with his clothes.”
“That motherf*cker.” Rich man Miao couldn’t help but curse. Just hearing Li Cheng’s description, his complexion began to turn white, and he felt some physical discomfort while covering his chest. “That f*cker was too vicious.” That was still a living person.
This sort of strategy, only one person came to mind.
Shen Shian took a deep breath. When Zhang Ze stepped into the library, he had deliberately tried to split and make the participants and the people who stayed behind became hostile. This turned out to have such a role.
He had to admit that he chose this bait very cleverly. If all the survivors voted to choose the person with the worst character here, they would probably choose the oval-faced man. Not only had he tried to close the door in advance for the sake of selfishness, he had also disregarded other’s lives and took the lead in wanting more supplies. Even Shen Shian didn’t like him at all.
Those who belong to the same group as the round face man were obviously the confidants carefully selected by Zhang Ze to execute the plan. Most likely, they were the people who had been almost closed by the oval-face. With the original grievances, coupled with Zhang Ze’s step-by-step guidance, they would have thought that the oval-faced man was just a waste and had no use other than wasting food. Use him as bait, not only to dispel their hatred but also to make the best use out of it.
Even if the participants of the other groups saw it, one path was, the oval-faced man that was bound to die by being bitten by a zombie, and the other path was a clear road leading to a lot of supplies. Which one to choose?
And they didn’t need to think about the people who stayed behind. They were cut out by Zhang Ze and had deliberately been nurtured to be weak. Even if they knew that the materials were exchanged for the life of the oval-faced man, only a few people would care.
Zhang Ze’s ultimate goal was to build a small society led by him in the library, with a clear hierarchy. The restaurant cleanup operation was probably only the first step.
Shen Shian was right. This batch of materials received from the restaurant was not shared with the people who stayed behind. It was all moved to the eight floor of the library, which was also the base of him and his followers today.
There was only one way for the people who stayed behind to obtain supplies and it was to serve the participants who had the supplies. Carrying their bags, massaging their legs, washing their clothes, and to accept all tasks given. If they wanted to live, they can only live this way.
The first to follow the new rules were the Huang couple, who previously wanted to steal snacks from the vending machine. With the first and second examples, it seemed easier to obey the new rules.
The remaining few were unwilling to sell their dignity. Even if they were stubborn, they might not be able to persist for a long time. All the materials in the library had been searched out. There were still many in the restaurant, but it was full of zombies. Like this, it was impossible for a small number of people to rush in. If they wanted to get food, what could they do besides begging for mercy?
Shen Shian had to admire Zhang Ze. In less than half a month, he completely shattered the civilized order familiar to the survivors, transitioned without hindrance, and continued running with the new order.
And this was just before 14 days of the global virus outbreak. How many places around the world were currently like H City Library and how many people like Zhang Ze were there?
On April 18, 2019, on the thirteenth night. When everyone entered the library, the illuminated table lamp suddenly went out, and the backup power system was exhausted.
After more than two hours, Shen Shian opened his eyes and felt the fading heat in his lower abdomen and a huge energy filled his body. He whispered to Shen Xun, “It’s time to leave.”
