Carrying a long sword, Shen Shian walked alone on the main road in the county.
He had walked for nearly a kilometer after getting off the car and he had only seen abandoned vehicles, crooked road signs, and broken fences. The county was dead silent. It seemed that the heavy downpour not only washed away the dirt and dust, but also the zombies and the survivors were washed clean together.
This scene was too unusual. Shen Shian’s eyebrows were furrowed while he carefully observed the traces around him to try to find a reasonable explanation. At the same time the doubt in his heart increased.
The population in the county is around 30,000. It was impossible for so many people to not get the flu and not become a zombie.
So where did the zombies go? Were they cleaned up by the army or cleaned up by the survivors?
If this was the case, why not collect supplies after the cleanup? The shops and small supermarkets on both sides of the road are still full. What’s more, where are the survivors?
The county had dense buildings, and it was probably due to the reconstruction of the old city. The buildings were unevenly arranged, and it looked a bit messy. Shen Shian could only observe the general situation of the buildings along the street. As for those in the back, most of them were blocked by other buildings and he couldn’t see them at all. He could still hear, but even with his enhanced hearing, there was no abnormal sound.
The wind blew a plastic bag, it rolled for a while, and then floated forward along the main road. Shen Shian’s eyes moved along with the plastic bag until it turned to an intersection. His eyes suddenly lit up.
There was an extremely large circular plaza, surrounded with endless high and low buildings in the county. The plaza had a checkered pattern, with trolleys, awning, display tables, long table benches, and plastic stools arranged in a crisscross pattern. At the top of a two-story tall inflatable arch there was a giant banner with a length of more than ten meters. The rope in the upper right corner was loose and the fallen part covered most of the content. Only three letters, “Lin’an County” could be seen.
Shen Shian stepped on the steps at the edge of the plaza and went to the arch to get a closer look, but he suddenly heard a movement. Raising his hand to hold the sword hilt, he quickly looked around.
In every street, every intersection, every building gap, the zombies that were previously missing were now like a tide of locusts. Looking around, the densely packed corpses were like mountains and sea, and it was roughly estimated that there were at least 10,000 or more, and most of them were mutant zombies.
A gust of wind blew across, blowing up the corner of the banner and showing the complete sentence. “Welcome to the 18th National Food Festival of Lin’an County”
Something is not right, it’s too weird. In Shen Shian’s mind, an alarm was ringing. His left hand exerted force, and the long sword was unsheathed, and at the same time, he used his spiritual powers fully.
Not only was the proportion of mutated zombies unusually high, but what was even more chilling was that zombies should be unconscious, even the mutated ones were driven entirely by the primitive instincts that yearn for flesh and blood. But the tens of thousands of zombies in front of him surrounded him in the center of the plaza, but did not rush directly, as if they had received some kind of instruction, even though they roared restlessly, they still suppressed their desire and stopped in place. Tens of thousands of empty eyes filled with lifeless energy all focused on Shen Shian.
These were not only zombies, but also a zombie army with a basic order.
Shen Shian’s heart beat like a drum, and his palm sweated. While trying to keep calm, he quickly searched the army of zombies. Since these zombies followed certain instructions, there must be a “leader” who gave the instructions. Aim first at the rider’s horse, to catch bandits, first catch the ringleader. His top priority was to find this leader as soon as possible.
Thanks to the outstanding vision brought by his spiritual powers, Shen Shian quickly fixed his sight on a certain point on the backmost position of the zombie army.
It was a zombie that seemed plain at first glance, half of his face was well preserved, and the other half of his face had eerie bones. From his clothing, he should be a male. The reason why Shen Shian paid him special attention in the seas of zombies was entirely because of his eyes
The pair of eyes that were supposed to be empty and irrational were clearly showing the greed and cunning of beasts.
And at the moment when Shen Shian looked at him, the sudden sense of crisis made him stand up and quickly dodge sideways. Almost at the same time, with the sound of breaking the sky, an invisible wind blade flashed from the position where he stood a moment ago. The first wind blade had not completely dissipated, and three more wind blades appeared out of thin air, attacking at the same time in the three different directions of upper, middle and lower. Shen Shian’s eyes narrowed and he couldn’t avoid it. On his face was a cut dripping with blood.
Tick, the bright red blood hit the ground. The wind spreaded the bloody scent, and the zombie army was suddenly agitated.
Shen Shian stared at the leader, and his heart sank. This was a capable zombie.
—
Not long after Shen Shian left, the atmosphere inside the off-road vehicle became strangely awkward.
Apart from his younger brother, Chen Nan had never dealt with four or five years old children for many years. He struggled for a long time, and took out a chocolate stuffed cake from his backpack, “Xun Xun, do you want to eat?”
Shen Xun gritted his teeth, and his face was like a fierce devil, “Don’t call me Xun Xun.” Only An An can call him Xun Xun.
Chen Nan smiled grumpily, “Sorry, what do you want me to call you?”
Shen Xun stared at him for a while. He lifted his chin and snorted, “Don’t call me anything. Don’t talk to me.” I have an important task, I don’t want to take the opportunity to talk and divert my attention, if you dare to steal the car, I will eat you.
Chen Nan bumped into a wall(not really a wall) one after another. He scratched his head helplessly, and could only concentrate on the scenery outside the window. The off-road vehicle was parked right next to a crossroad. From here, they could see the street on both sides. The two were relatively speechless and the car was quiet again.
It was just that the silence didn’t last long. Shen Xun suddenly sniffed his nose and looked on the street on the right. After a few seconds, Chen Nan, who was watching the street on the left, exclaimed suddenly, “No way, there are zombies.”
A few small groups of zombies suddenly appeared on the empty street a few minutes ago, roared hoarsely and wandered aimlessly.
Chen Nan was stiff, and he immediately lowered his voice to Shen Xun, “Hurry down and hide your head.” The county was so empty, maybe if they are lucky, they might not even be discovered by the zombies.
However, it turned out that they did not have such good luck. The original aimless zombies seemed to have quickly found a common goal and concentrated in the direction of the off-road vehicle. About five minutes later, the first zombie slapped its hand on the car window, and with rotten eyes that were full of maggots, he looked into the car window. The turbid eyeballs that could fall at any time rolled, just in front of Chen Nan.
The muscles in its face ripped, and its hoarse roar sharpened. As if receiving some kind of signal, more and more zombies came and hit the off-road vehicle one after another.
Chen Nan cursed silently. Squeezing the thorn stick in his hand, he turned his head to calm Shen Xun who was sitting in the co-driver’s seat, “Xun Xun don’t be afraid, I will protect you.”
Shen Xun’s lips twitched, these undead corpses didn’t dare to eat him. “Who wants you to protect?” Before he even said it, he saw Chen Nan opening the skylight, went out through the skylight and stood on the roof of the car.
The roof area of the off-road vehicle was wide, and because of the high chassis, the zombies couldn’t climb up and catch him. During the time with Shen Shian, Chen Nan’s combat skills have been greatly improved. With the advantage of standing on the roof of the car, and with the sharp weapon in his hand, the zombies would soon be finished.
However, the zombies seemed to be endless, and they came out from the buildings on every street. The previous wave of zombies had not been finished, and more zombies flooded into the tide, even stepping on the other zombies that had fallen. It was only a matter of time until one of them grabbed Chen Nan’s trousers. The continuous attacking and dodging was really exhausting. After only 20 minutes, Chen Nan could feel the obvious soreness from his arm.
What was even more frightening was that as the zombies gathered more and more, the off-road vehicle was shaken left and right, like a small boat that may overturn in the waves at any time.
Chen Nan knew that this off-road vehicle had good performance. Even if it was really overthrown, the zombies could not break the glass or the door. But once the car was really overturned, how should he get up and wait for Brother Shen to return? How could they escape from this place? If they abandoned the car, they would lose the important stuff, not only that, could they even run through these zombies who had no fatigue at all? It’s even more unrealistic to wait in the car. The food and water in the car was limited. They couldn’t hide inside for a lifetime. Zombies were ignorant, unconscious, and had no life. They could stay here without eating for more than ten days or half a month or even months. Once the zombies gather more and more, in the end even brother Shen who rushed back to save them will be in danger.
Chen Nan tried to stabilize his body, pierced through two zombies’ heads with a stick, and then quickly returned to the car and closed the skylight. Then he packed two bags of cookies and two bottles of water into his backpack.
Shen Xun was grimacing at the zombies outside the window. He heard the movement and turned to look at him suspiciously. “What are you doing?” Did he want to leave him alone and run, he knew that human beings were not credible. Except for An An.
Chen Nan tied his backpack tightly to his body, knelt down and looked at Shen Xun, “Xun Xun, I need you to listen to me carefully. There are more and more zombies outside. If the car is pushed down by zombies, not only us, even brother Shen will be in danger. So I’m going to lead the zombies away.”
Shen Xun frowned, and his expression suddenly became strange, “You’re going to lead the zombies.”
Chen Nan nodded, “I promised brother Shen that I would protect you, and I would never go against it. You can rest assured that these are only ordinary zombies outside. I can run fast and they wouldn’t be able to catch up. You stay in the car and keep the skylight closed when I leave. Unless brother Shen returns, you must not open the door or the window. If I can get rid of the zombies, I will come back as soon as possible. If I don’t come back,” Chen Nan paused. “There is something wrong in this county. You let brother Shen drive away first and leave a mark along the way. I will definitely find a way to find you.”
Shen Xun didn’t speak. It wasn’t until Chen Nan was going to leave through the skylight, that he said, “What if you died?”
Chen Nan turned his head and smiled. He bent over and rubbed the child’s head, “I will try my best not to die.”
He climbed out of the skylight and stood on the roof of the car, he chose a place with the least zombies, cleared a bit, and jumped down.
Brother Shen left to the front, he couldn’t lead the zombies there; the back road needed to be set aside for retreat, which was also impossible. Chen Nan quickly made up his mind and ran to the left side of the road. After he ran about fifty meters away, he pulled out a fruit knife and made a cut in the hand, then raised it and waved at the zombie group, “Come, come here, don’t you want to eat humans, come and eat me, bastard!”
Attracted by blood, the zombie swarm turned around quickly and stumbled towards Chen Nan’s position. The crowds of zombies disappeared soon after.
Shen Xun was lying on the car window, his dark green eyes staring at the empty street for a long time.
