Xia Xingchen returned to the President’s Manor and proceeded to see Xia Dabai first. After she reported the situation to him, she bathed and continued to prepare for her examination.
Only a day was left.
She wanted to go to the study room to find some information. When she opened the door to enter, there was a lit bulb in the room. Upon seeing him, she was rendered surprised.
Bai Yeqing.
His long body was leaning on the round bookshelf and he was holding a book. The light was shining down from his top and it created a circle of golden light around him.
Xia Xingchen did not think that he would be there. It was hard to catch a glimpse of him around the house before, but now it seemed that she had seen him quite frequently.
“Mister President,” she greeted. She tried her best not to recall yesterday’s incident where fireworks almost sparked between them.
Bai Yeqing merely raised his eyes to glance at her. His thin lips were pressed tightly together and he had lowered his head to continue reading the book in his hands.
Xia Xingchen was used to meeting obstacles in her life. He always had that cold attitude anyway, however, was it just her hallucination? She felt that Mister President was not in a good mood today.
Xia Xingchen circled past him and proceeded to find the book she needed.
She picked a few books from the bookshelf, however, she lacked one more book which was placed on a shelf just above her head. Remembering the incident from before, she decided to avoid going up the ladder.
She tried her best to tiptoe but could not reach it.
As she furrowed her brows and frustration seeping in, a dark shadow shrouded over her from behind. Her heart skipped a beat and the man’s sturdy chest had already leaned over and was against her back.
Afterward…
His long arms reached over and easily pulled the book out. His fingertips unintentionally brushed against her.
The warm touch made her heartbeat quicken. She instinctively turned around, while he, on the other hand, looked down. At that instant, their lips were so close that there was not even an inch between them. Her eyelashes almost brushed against the tip of his nose.
His eyes had a deep gaze.
Her breathing quickened and her body instinctively turned around to face the bookshelf since she wanted to keep some distance from him because…
This man was too dangerous. With just one look, she could be attracted to him and would not be able to free herself.
But he was on her back while she fronted the bookshelf—all of her movements were in vain.
“How is he?” Bai Yeqing suddenly asked.
Xia Xingchen thought he would step back but he did not. The hand that he had used to hold his book was planted against the bookshelf for support as he bent down to look at her.
He had a large build and with this posture, it made her feel strongly oppressed. Her thoughts were messy and she could only hesitantly ask, “Who are you referring to?”
“Your blind date partner.” When he said those words, his voice sounded cold but he did not show any emotions on his face.
She froze since she never thought he would figure out that she went for a blind date. It looked like Xia Dabai told him.
Her fingers pressed against the bookshelf and gently tapped it. She then mumbled, “Hmm… he’s quite nice…”
“Do you plan to continue?” He stared at the back of her head and his voice became deeper which he himself did not realize.
“He seemed nice so… we will get to know each other better first.”
Bai Yeqing gave her a harsh glare before stepping back. Since she could no longer feel his breathing behind her, the sense of oppression she felt decreased as well—Xia Xingchen could finally heave out a sigh of relief.
She turned back around. He passed the book to her and glanced at her. “You don’t like Xu Yan now?”
“Him?”
When his name was mentioned, Xia Xingchen still felt a bit of sadness in her heart.
However, she shook her head. “Our relationship ended when I got pregnant with Dabai five years ago, so why do we still talk about liking him now?”
He scoffed. “You sure change your heart very fast. You were still settling the scores with me because of him a few days ago yet now you are cool about it.”
Xia Xingchen felt embarrassed. “I was drunk that day. I won’t do that again.”
“Oh, right.” She recalled a matter and hesitated for a moment before she cautiously asked, “Miss Song and you… will you really marry Miss Song?”
Bai Yeqing glanced at her as if he was searching for something on her face. Xia Xingchen feared that he would misunderstand, so she quickly raised her hand and explained, “Don’t misunderstand. I don’t mean to ask about your private life… I just wanted to know when the wedding will take place… Once both of you are married to each other, I definitely have to move out. If you can give me a heads up, I’ll have time to mentally prepare myself.”
He furrowed his brows and did not seem to like her explanation. He walked out of the study room with heavy footsteps.
Xia Xingchen instinctively followed him out and his cold voice drifted to her. “Before I allow you to move out, you are not allowed to go anywhere!”
With that, he turned back around and gave her a harsh glare. “You are not allowed to get married to your blind date partner either!”
“…why?” Xia Xingchen could not understand at all. This rule was too overbearing!
“No reason. If I say you are not allowed, then you are not allowed!”
“…”
…
Xia Xingchen kept thinking about the context behind the President’s words ‘not allowed’ that he uttered last night. She just could not comprehend.
“Weiyang, tell me… if you’re living with a man under the same roof and he strangely says that you are not allowed to move out, what do you think could be the reason for that?” Xia Xingchen asked Chi Weiyang as she drank her coffee in the lounge.
“Maybe because he wants to share the rent with others because it’s cheaper that way?”
“…” Xia Xingchen rolled her eyes. “Then if he says that you are not allowed to get married to your blind date partner?”
“Do you still have to ask me that?” This time, it was Chi Weiyang’s turn to roll her eyes. “If any man tells you that, you don’t even have to think about it and know that he likes you! Since he likes you, naturally he wouldn’t want you to move out much less get married to another person. Do you still have to ask me such questions?”
“Like?” Xia Xingchen was momentarily stunned.
Bai Yeqing liked her? She pondered for a while before she quickly waved her hand. It was just too impossible.
“That’s impossible! That’s absolutely impossible! He won’t ever like me!”
Chi Weiyang sensed something strange and put down her coffee before leaning over. “Xingchen, so which man are you living under the same roof with? You actually never even told me that! No wonder you never invited me to your house! You actually hid a man there!”
“No, it’s not what you think it is…”
“Then what is the situation?” Chi Weiyang folded her arms and stared at her. “Tell me, who is he? Is he handsome, tall, and rich? Hmph. If you dare to hide the truth from me, bear the consequences yourself!”
Xia Xingchen had a slip of her tongue and did not know how to explain it at the moment.
As she racked her brains, the television in the lounge had unintentionally snatched her attention away.
The television in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs constantly showed the latest political news.
At that instant, a piece of breaking news interrupted and was shown on the screen—it stole Xia Xingchen’s breath away.
“Now, we have a report coming in. Just two minutes ago, an explosion happened at the White Plaza where it affected the President’s office and civilians nearby. We will conduct a detailed report about the number of casualties later
The reporter at the anchor station had a serious look.
“Mister President may be among the casualties…”
