Chapter 3: The Escape

At that moment, the coat in her hands had become her weapon. She flung the coat at the rats, one by one sending them flying into the air. The rats smashed against the wall and fell onto the ground. Her movement was light-handed, but she cleverly leveraged on inertia to take advantage and exert force. Each rat was only as big as a fist, and her persistent flinging killed more than half of them within no time.
A faint smell of blood lingered in the gloomy and small black hut. The squeaking of the rats had gradually died down, as most of them lay dead across the floor. The other rats that survived witnessed the savageness of the human who was in the hut with them, and they all cowered into a corner to stay away from her.
“Phew!”
Tang Ning was panting heavily as she leaned against the wall with the scrunched up coat still in her hands. As she was catching her breath, her mind was throwing out and sorting the memories that did not belong to her.
Tang Ning, a 14-year-old girl with the same name as her. In the final moments of her life, this young girl was severely tormented and traumatized. Finally, she died in pain and despair.
The most distinct memory was that of the girl’s captivity in this hut. She was kept in utter isolation, and even the angels could not hear her desperate pleas. She was frightened, helpless, and desolate.
The Tang family’s eldest daughter, Tang Ning, died. But the Tang Ning, a Prodigy of 21st Century Medicinal Arcana is still alive.
She took deep and slow breaths. On one hand, it helped to alleviate the pain of her injuries. On the other hand, it helped tame the rage and savageness in her heart.
Tang Ning softly muttered to herself, “Rest assured. I will take revenge on your behalf. Whoever tormented you to death, I will make his ordeal a hundred times worse!” Her eyes gleamed with a cold, murderous look.
2She looked at the rats huddled in the corner, then looked up at the window. She was silently contemplating her surroundings. How was she going to escape?
As night fell, it was silent on the mountain except for the faint noises of crickets echoing in the darkness.
The Shadow Mercs were resting under a tree. Meanwhile, back in the small black hut, Tang Ning had both her legs propped up against the walls in a corner in the hut. She was attempting to scale her way up to the roof inch by inch.
Finally, she crawled out of the small window, and into the silvery moonlight. She took a deep breath, inhaling the calming fresh air, before going into a vigilant position, scanning her surroundings carefully.
Tang Ning knew from the memories in her mind that this was a world of cultivators. With her current condition, she would be no match for the Shadow Mercs. With that in mind, she crept down from the roof, and, using the darkness of the night as her cover, left as fast as possible.
“I heard something move!” One of the Shadow Mercs who had already lay down to rest, suddenly stood up with his eyes wide open, peering into the dark. He took a deep breath and approached the small black hut. Under the moonlight, he looked through the window in the roof, only to see that the hut was empty. He gasped.
“She ran away!”
The other three Shadow Mercs hurried over, looking startled and astonished. Still, in disbelief, they climbed onto the roof to see for themselves. True enough, the hut was empty except for the dead rats on the floor. “Goodness! How did she escape? She has lost her Cultivation Base, and her body is full of injuries. How did she escape from this small black hut?”
“The important thing now is to stop her!”
The leader of the Shadow Mercs looked at the rest of them with a gloomy face. With a tone that was bloodthirsty and callous, he continued, “She wouldn’t have gone too far. We’ll turn over the entire mountain if that’s what it takes to drag her out of hiding! We must not let her leave the mountain alive.”
“Yes!” The other men knew that if they let Tang Ning escape, they would all be dead meat.
The Shadow Mercs quickly disappeared in all directions and began their search. Little did they know that the girl they were looking for was just a few meters away, hiding in the tree branches.
