Chapter 15 – Abandon the Family?
Eventually, they arrived at San Nainai’s place. Ye Ling knocked on the door, calling: “San Nainai, Duo’er and I came to bring you some meat. Please open the door.”
When San Nainai heard Ye Ling, she immediately ran out to open the door.
“Fourth child, little lass, come in.” She smiled, took Liu Duo’s hand, and walked to the main room together.
Ye Ling carried the meat directly to the kitchen.
“Lass, come sit and have some tea,” San Nainai was kind and hospitable.
“Thank you,” Liu Duo politely took the tea. She took a sip and placed the cup on the table.
Not knowing what to say, Liu Duo was a little embarrassed. After all, she’s didn’t exactly know her all that well.
After putting the meat in the kitchen, Ye Ling came over: “San Nainai, I left the meat on the stove and covered it so cats can’t get to it.”
“Thank you, child.” Grandma smiled.
Liu Duo squinted her eyes at Ye Ling, signaling she wanted to go. Catching her meaning, Ye Ling said: “San Nainai, we’ll be on our way. I’m going to take Duo’er to familiarize herself with the vegetable fields and rice paddies at home.”
Knowing these youngsters nothing to talk about with an old woman like her, she said, “Yes, go show her around.”
“Take care, then.” Ye Ling took Liu Duo and went out.
“Go on now,” San Nainai waved them off.
Walking on the road, Ye Ling nervously told Li Duo: “Duoer, we just have these two acres of vegetable fields, and one acre of rice paddies.”
Their property is indeed small. Liu Duo’s heart quivered, but wasn’t worried. They’d expand their land and home in the future.
When she awoke, she found their house consisted of only a courtyard, two bedrooms, a kitchen, lavatory, and well.
Seeing Liu Duo’s silent, indifferent expression, Ye Ling said nervously: “Duo’er, rest assured. My brothers and I will do our best to make life good for you.”
Liu Duo said, walking around: “Fourth brother, what’re you nervous about? Are you afraid I’ll abandon you due to poverty?”
Wasn’t that exactly why you originally abandoned us? Ye Ling thought, but didn’t answer. She said she wouldn’t run again, and he chose to believe in her, but that didn’t make things better.
“Okay, don’t make that face. It doesn’t suit you.”
Liu Duo took Ye Ling’s hand “Fourth brother, whether you believe it or not, I will not abandon our family. Our situation may be modest, but I don’t want to give up. I’ll work hard with you to improve our situation. Wealth doesn’t concern me, I just want us to be happy and healthy.”
In her past life, Liu Duo was from a rich second generation family, but she was never happy. Being forced to undergo constant medical exams, she would’ve gladly traded her wealth for a healthy body. This was something those who’ve never experienced illness and torture could not understand.
Liu Duo’s warm hand put Ye Ling at ease. No erratic heartbeat, just calm assurance. He knew he could trust what she just said.
“I believe. I believe, Duo’er. Yes, the five of us together will work hard,” Ye Ling said, holding the back of her hand. Any doubts he had were now gone.
The villagers saw them holding hands and began gossiping.
