Chapter 79 Happy Birthday to You
The next day, Ji Naitang arrived at the company and heard the receptionists at the front desk discussing something. He originally didn’t care about gossip, but when he heard the words “CEO Cen,” he couldn’t help but go over to ask, “What are you talking about?”
Receptionist A: “We’re talking about CEO Cen’s driver.”
“Driver? What’s wrong with CEO Cen’s driver?”
Receptionist B: “The driver came over to inquire about CEO Cen’s whereabouts. He said CEO Cen hadn’t asked him to drive in a long time. He was worried whether he was going to be fired.”
Ji Naitang was speechless. He thought carefully. Cen Muqi seemed to have driven himself lately and rarely used a driver. No wonder the driver was so worried. “I don’t think CEO Cen is thinking about firing the driver.”
If someone else said this, the receptionists would definitely retort, but the person in front of them right now was Ji Naitang. The whole Cen Corporation knew that Ji Naitang was Cen Muqi’s, so they naturally didn’t refute.
“Special Assistant Ji, you might have to work harder today.”
More than an hour before work ended, Assistant Liu suddenly came in with a pile of documents. He piled them all onto Ji Naitang’s desk.
“What’s the matter?”
“Ah, there are some problems with a project. I have to find someone to organize this data and input them. I can’t do it right now. Can you……?”
“I’m an assistant too. I’ll do it.”
Ji Naitang didn’t hesitate and accepted the work. He had thought that he was too free at work. When he was particularly idle and couldn’t be at ease browsing the internet on his phone, he would feel that time was passing by very slowly. So, even if he wasn’t doing anything, he would feel really bored.
Now that there was something he could do to pass the time, he was very happy and didn’t worry about whether he would get off work late after he was done. Also, he really wanted to do something to help Cen Muqi.
“Oh, right. CEO Cen left earlier to take care of something. Let me know when you’re done, so I can tell the driver to send you back.”
“I can take a taxi……” Ji Naitang then recalled what the receptionists said about the driver’s concerns. He hesitated and then nodded.
Cen Muqi finally remembered that he had a driver. If he refused, the driver would worry about whether he would be fired again.
But Cen Muqi seemed to be a bit strange these past two days. If this was before, he would definitely call or text him to explain. Why was Assistant Liu doing it?
Ji Naitang had a stomach full of doubts, but he looked at the pile of documents next to him. He felt that he didn’t have the time to think about that now. He had to hurry and complete work first.
When Ji Naitang finished sorting through and inputting all the documents, it was almost 6:00 p.m. He sent the documents to Assistant Liu and stood up to stretch. Then he clocked off.
Other than him, there were a few people left working overtime. They probably didn’t complete their work during the day. Ji Naitang rode the elevator down and found the driver waiting for him in the lobby on the first floor. He looked very excited. He was probably happy that his job was safe for the time being.
Ji Naitang had gone to and from work with Cen Muqi recently. He was a bit unused to going back by himself. He wondered if Cen Muqi was back and if they could have dinner later.
He walked to the apartment door and inputted his fingerprints and code. Then he pushed the door open and walked inside. The inside of the house was pitch-black. His hand that was about to close the door paused. Usually, Aunt Su would leave a light on when she had to leave, she. So, this was the first time Ji Naitang encountered this situation.
Just as Ji Naitang was spacing out, he saw a candle light up in the middle of the living room. Then he heard Assistant Liu singing, “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you ~ ”
When the song ended, the lights turned on. Ji Naitang could see then that it was Assistant Liu and Cen Muqi. The candlelight earlier was from the cake that Assistant Liu was holding.
Cen Muqi stood in front of Ji Naitang and said, “Happy birthday, Ji Naitang. I don’t know what you like, so I randomly bought something. If you don’t like it, you can tell me what kind of birthday present you want.”
Ji Naitang stood dazed at the door. Because of the words “happy birthday” and “birthday present,” he instantly returned to his childhood. His body turned cold and he started to gasp for breath.
