Chapter 81: Backfire
Proofread by Peter Gong
Embarrassment only exists a moment for it has been more than 20 years since Wang Feng married Yu Jie and it is easy for her to detect the unusual sign. She recovers soon and disguises her nervousness with a blank face. However, her little tricks are nothing or even can be described as ridiculous in the eyes of Ko Chen and Duan Qingfeng.
Having no mood to deal with her, Ko Chen stares at her and points at the door, “Yu Yu killed herself.” His sight sticks to Wang Feng when he says the words, wanting to know how she will act. Hearing the news as if for the first time, Wang Feng keeps widening her eyes and mouth for several seconds before she gives out a heartbreaking roar, then she steps forward to grab Ko Chen’s collar. “What did you do to her?” Wang Feng’s eyes are bloodshot.
On the contrary, Ko Chen has always been indifferent even if Wang Feng is so heart-broken. He just tilts his eyes down, observing Wang Feng without any expression. Maybe Ko Chen’s reaction is not in her expectation, Wang Feng releases her hand and steps back before Ko Chen opens his mouth. But soon, she takes on a ferocious expression, just like a shrew with her hands crossing her wait, yelling at Ko Chen, “Ko Chen, if you don’t give me a solution, I won’t let you go! ”
Ko Chen looks at Wang Feng who is like a clown whose words are like a big joke, and his cold smile is fleeting. Ko Chen stares at Wang Feng, sending out a kind of irresistible oppression just like an Asura from hell. “When I was going to divorce Yu Fei, why weren’t you so aggressive?” The flame of Wang Feng goes out, and her shoulders lower and she dare not look at Ko Chen, and stammers, “you two cannot go on, it’s no use saying so much…” Her voice is getting smaller and smaller and completely vanishes at last. She lowers her head and doesn’t know what she is thinking about.
Wang Feng’s words remind him of Yu Fei’s experience as a child. His anger rises gradually, and his breathing becomes thick and heavy. Duan Qingfeng has been looking on coldly. Although he doesn’t know much about Wang Feng, he gets a general idea from Ko Chen. The filthy things the mother and daughter did are shocking. Especially Wang Feng, who always pretends to be a nice stepmother to outsiders, is really vicious. However, what matters now is Ko Chen’s condition instead of Wang Feng and Yu Yu.
The faint sign of anger has appears which accelerates his breath, and that makes Duan Qingfeng worry about his condition and he hurriedly mediates the dispute. Standing between Ko Chen and Wang Feng, Duan Qingfeng pulls the distance between them a little further. Then he advises Ko Chen, “you are family. How can you talk to your mother-in-law like this?” Having listened to his comfort, Wang Feng feels a little better and whispers, “Qingfeng is more sensible.”
Her voice is not so slight that it falls clearly in the ears of Ko Chen and Duan Qingfeng. Thinking of Wang Feng’s fantasy about Duan Qingfeng before, Ko Chen’s mouth quivers. Just having a look, Duan Qingfeng perceives what is Ko Chen thinking about and pats him heavily when Wang Feng does not notice him. After that, he immediately turns to look at Wang Feng whose obsessed sight makes his feel sick. But he has to bear it, even puts on a smile, and says gently to Wang Feng, “aunt, Ko Chen is young. Don’t be angry with him.”
The word “aunt” is deliberately stressed. Hearing the call, Wang Feng is upset at once, however, she can’t show it but bears it with her face becoming as colorful as a palette, which is really ridiculous. It is hard not to laugh, but Duan Qingfeng still pretends to be ignorant of nothing and continues without hesitation, “don’t blame Ko Chen, aunt. I’ve been with him these days and we really don’t know why your daughter suddenly falls into despair.”
The buoyant sentences directly highlights the seniority. Wang Feng used to presume on her beauty and refused to admit her age. Today, what Duan Qingfeng said breaks her illusion. Wang Feng is about to say something while the nurse runs out of the room and says in a hurry, “Miss Yu is awake” Wang Feng swallows the words she is going to say, rushes into the room and stands by the bed. She grabs Yu Yu’s hand, scolding her anxiously, “Yu, how can you be so stupid? How can I live if you die?”
What Ko Chen and Duan Qingfeng witness when they enter the room is Wang Feng lying on the edge of the bed and crying. Her words, which really seem to be sad, are heard by them. Yu Yu lies on the bed and turns her head to look at Wang Feng. Hearing the movement at the door, she immediately looks at Ko Chen, with a face without blood, which makes her less arrogant and domineering. On seeing Ko Chen, her eyes turn red, and tears keep flashing, which makes her more pitiful.
If it is someone else, Ko Chen may feel pathetic, but the one is Yu Yu, and there is only a hateful feeling left. “Chen…” Yu Yu opens his mouth with difficulty and utters a syllable hoarsely, which sounds like a rusty sword grinding, causing eardrum pain. The indifferent attitude of Ko Chen who stands at the door without any response grieves her. Yu Yu is reluctant to take back her sight with tears rolling in her redder eyes and tears finally flow down, wetting the pillow.
Wang Feng stands with her back to them, and quietly thumbs up to Yu Yu, which signals that she has performed well. Yu Yu’s sight briefly lingers on her gesture for a second, without any expression. Since Yu Yu has been saved, Ko Chen doesn’t want to waste any more time on her. He calls Uncle Zhang over and tells him, “look for someone to guard her. Just make sure she is alive.”
Uncle Zhang understands that what Ko Chen said demonstrates it clearly that he won’t take care of Yu Yu any more. Ko Chen has been disgusted with her, plus the suicide this time, he feels more bored about her. If it is not for Yu Fei, he doesn’t want to waste a second with her.
