Ryan chuckled upon hearing Archer’s question.
He had indeed developed a frugal habit in the past ten years. His position in the Mears family was not a great one, but his attitude toward money was strong.
Ryan took two steps forward to touch the Maybach’s perfectly streamlined body.
“The body of this car is made of the latest composite materials. It can withstand the impact from a heavy truck, safety impeccable. Besides, it has intelligent control, using voice to control the system. Would you like to try it first?”
Archer sounded him out as he could see that Ryan liked this Maybach very much.
Ryan thought for a while, thinking that he would have to collect the debt in the afternoon and go to work in the evening. It was indeed inconvenient to have no car. “Okay. So, Mr. Morton, let me drive this car for two or three days while you get me a more ordinary car for me. I am fine with that as long as it runs. Since cars are just a means of transportation, it doesn’t have to be so flashy.”
Archer quickly nodded when Ryan accepted the Maybach temporarily. “Okay, Mr. Fletcher. I will leave you to it.”
He hurriedly urged the chauffeur to start the vehicle and sped off like a bat out of hell, as if he was afraid that Ryan would change his mind all of a sudden.
Others might not know the mortification Ryan suffered during his ten years of matrilocal marriage, but not Archer. Things were better when Lumi’s grandpa was still alive. But after her grandpa passed away, things got worse for Ryan. The entire Mears family members started to push him around.
After Archer left, Ryan walked around the Maybach to admire it one more time before he got into it. Just then, he got a call from Lucy, his ex.
He frowned, wondering why she called at this time. He hesitated for a while, but still picked up the call. “Why are you still calling me?”
Ryan still had a feeling for Lucy, as she was his first love in college. But the key was, what Lucy did at the hotel yesterday had broken his heart.
“Can’t I call you now, Ryan? I heard you won a lottery.” She sounded gentle over the phone.
He won a lottery?
He was taken aback. As far as he remembered, he had only told Raymond that he had won a $1 million prize, $800,000 of which he spent on helping Lumi buy gifts.
“Yeah. Is there any problem? If not, I will hang up now.” Ryan frowned as he felt he and Lucy did not have the same wavelength. He did not want to waste his time on her.
“Why are you treating me like this, Ryan? Have you forgotten the three years that we were together in college? Hmph! Back then, I did not intend to leave you. It was Kenneth, the jerk who coerced me into this. Could you forgive me?” Lucy sounded coy, with pretentious anger on the phone.
He shook his head gently. She was still self-deceiving, even at this point. Or was she after the $200,000 left from his lottery prize?
“I’m sorry, I’m already married. We had better not contact each other from now on,” Ryan said, and was about to hang up.
“You heartless man, can’t you give me a chance to make up for it? Tomorrow night, our class rep Andrew Brown said that we are going to have a party. Join us. After the party, you and I can have a good chat in the hotel room,” Lucy huffed over the phone.
Her last sentence reeked of sensual flavor. What she meant could not have been more apparent.
During the college years, Ryan had courted Lucy for three years. But he never got a chance to kiss her, let alone sleep together. Lucy thought he was still that innocent boy she used to know.
“I’m not interested.” Ryan hung up, saying nothing further.
He still remembered how his former college mates treated him back then. There were over 30 of them, but most of them were notorious for intrigue. Especially the class rep Andrew Brown. He still remembered clearly during a prom at the university, where Andrew held a wine glass, poured red wine over his head in front of all his college mates, and humiliated him.
He would be better off not going to such an alumni party.
He had grinned and bore it because back then, he did not know when the family ban would be lifted, and whether he could find the carrier of the second antidote. But now that the family ban had been lifted, things were different now.
After hanging up, he constantly received WhatsApp notifications on his cell. He opened it and sure enough, messages kept popping up in the alumni chat group.
‘It’s been three years since we graduated. Tomorrow we will gather at Waypoint Hotel.’
The first message was from Andrew Brown, the class rep.
‘I am so looking forward to it. I heard Ryan won a $1 million lottery. It’s on @Ryan. May Waypoint Hotel isn’t good enough. Shall we choose a five-star hotel?’
‘Agree! $1 million. That’s 10 years of our salaries!’
…
Everyone mentioned Ryan in the chat, but most of these guys were barely his acquaintances. They were now thinking of taking advantage of him.
Ryan did not feel like entertaining his alumni. After thinking for a while, he typed something in reply. ‘I won a lottery, but it cost me $800,000 to buy a birthday gift for my grandma-in-law, and I bought a few clothes for my wife, too. That left me with less than $100,000. I am broke, sorry. I can’t join you guys.’
After sending out this message, he closed WhatsApp, fired up the Maybach, and hurried to Mears Corporation.
In the bedroom of Kenneth’s house, Kenneth was hugging the naked Lucy in his arms as they looked at the message that Ryan sent into the alumni chat group. The corner of his mouth was curled up in a wicked smile. “Raymond didn’t lie—Ryan has indeed won a lottery. Too bad that he has only $100,000 left. But it is better than nothing. We will proceed with our plan tomorrow.”
“How can you bring yourself to see me sleeping with him, Kenneth? You don’t mind him cuckolding you?” Lucy sounded coquettish, but with pretentious anger, as she wriggled in Kenneth’s arms.
Kenneth gently touched her back once. “Of course, I mind. But think about it; he still has one hundred thousand dollars from the lottery prize. If you sleep with him once, that money will be ours, and you can have the Hermès that you have been dreaming of.”
A fleeting light flashed in Lucy’s eyes, speaking of the Hermès. “You are so bad, Kenneth. You have got to come up quickly tomorrow. I don’t want that loser touching me. It’s disgusting.”
“OK.”
…
Twenty minutes later, Ryan parked the car in the outdoor parking lot of Mears Corporation and walked towards the building.
Newlane Logistics owed the company $20 million. There should be an IOU or something. He needed to get these things from Lumi.
However, when he arrived at the building entrance, two security personnel stretched out their hands to stop him. “I am sorry. No outsider allowed.”
Ryan was taken aback and glanced at one of the security personnel. He knew the guy, who was the head of the security team in Mears Corporation, and a distant nephew of Lumi’s aunt, Lilian. His name was Albert Wood. He became the head of the security team, thanks to his relationship with Lilian.
“Albert. Don’t you know me? I came to see my wife.” Ryan tried to be polite, not wanting to create any trouble with Albert.
But Albert did not give him a damn but instead spitting on the ground. “I know you, of course, the goldbrick and loser who lives off your wife’s money. How can you still have the nerve to see your wife? Wait at the door if you are here to pick up your wife!”
