Chapter 3: Encounter With His Childhood Friend

Ling Mo could faintly see what had happened inside the bus through the zombie puppet’s eyes.
In the dark cabin, there were many fuzzy silhouettes, all unmoving.
Going around the front of the bus, he could see that the back door was deformed by the crash and was impossible to open.
A few windows were shattered, but the gap wasn’t big enough for someone to crawl out either. Ling Mo made the zombie puppet completely break a window pane before climbing inside.
The smell was exceptionally strong inside. Although Ling Mo smelled it through the puppet, he couldn’t help but frown at it.
The smell of blood and rotten flesh mixed together made him want to vomit.
As soon as the zombie puppet jumped inside, he stepped on a corpse. Ling Mo looked down and felt a chill in his heart.
Although the body was rotten, but he could still clearly see a pair of red eyes on a swollen face. It was obvious that he had become a zombie before his death.
No one had escaped and no one had entered. Did the zombies starve to death?
Ling Mo quickly controlled the zombie puppet to walk deeper down the bus, but quickly realized that something was wrong.
The inside of the bus was filled with large bloodstains and ripped fabric. Evidently, someone had become infected here and begun a massacre.
However, all the bodies lying on the ground were infected zombies. Ling Mo also realized that the backs of the zombies’ heads were all slit open.
Who had done this?

Ling Mo suddenly felt his heart jump and in one stupefied moment, a dark shadow leaped up from behind the seats and pounced onto the back of the zombie puppet like an agile leopard.
The dark shadow acted without a sound and was extremely quick. Although it wasn’t too strong, it has already reached out for the back of the zombie puppet’s head before Ling Mo knew it.
Ling Mo’s heart skipped a beat and instinctively controlled the zombie puppet to fall backwards, pinning the dark shadow on the ground with all his might.
At the same time, the back of the zombie puppet’s head was ripped apart and fresh blood immediately gushed out.
“Damn… That hand is like a blade!”
Ling Mo’s heart ached as he had put so much effort into raising a young and powerful zombie puppet. At the same time, he feared the dark shadow beneath him very much.
He pressed on the neck of the shadow with the puppet’s elbow, and used his other arm to pin down the wrist of the shadow and push himself up.
However, as soon as he got up, the shadow’s other hand immediately stabbed into the zombie puppet’s soft stomach.
Although the zombie puppet couldn’t feel pain, Ling Mo’s expression suddenly turned extremely complicated.
To be exact, Ling Mo had prepared to counterattack the moment the dark shadow moved, but he froze when he saw the dark shadow’s face.
“Ye… Ye Lian…”
The dark shadow who was lying underneath him with a hand in the zombie puppet’s stomach was the person he was searching for, Ye Lian.
Ling Mo had thought of many scenarios of how he would find Ye Lian, but he never imagined that he would meet her in a situation like this.
After mutating, Ye Lian’s beautiful eyes had turned blood red, yet her expression wasn’t distorted like other zombies’. Her expression seemed normal, but cold.
Ling Mo zoned out for a while and didn’t snap out until Ye Lian grabbed and pulled out the zombie puppet’s intestines.
Ye Lian’s petite hands didn’t look too different from before, but her nails were much harder than those of ordinary people, and her hands were also strong enough to stab through human bodies. She was obviously different from a regular zombie.
Normal zombies wouldn’t attack the zombie puppet as they were of the same kind. Remembering the many zombie corpses on the bus, Ling Mo glanced at Ye Lian and suddenly understood something.
After all the humans on the bus had been eaten, the remaining zombies were driven by severe starvation to kill each other and Ye Lian was the last survivor. She seemed to have another odd mutation other than the basic characteristics of a zombie…
While Ling Mo was distracted by his thoughts, fresh blood spewed out from the zombie puppet’s intestines and splattered all over Ye Lian’s body.
Stimulated by the smell of fresh blood, her eyes seemed to turn even redder and she became stronger than before. She grabbed the zombie puppet’s arm and swung him aside.
As soon as the zombie landed on the ground, Ye Lian threw herself at him and choked his neck with both her hands.
She was much more agile than ordinary zombies and Ling Mo was restrained by her before he could even react.
The feeling of suffocation evoked the zombie puppet’s fighting instincts and Ling Mo’s mind felt blank. This feeling meant that the zombie puppet was about to break away from his control.
Ling Mo finally recovered from his shocking reunion with Ye Lian. To a certain degree, it was his fault that she had turned into a zombie like this…
As he tried to take back control of the zombie puppet, a bold idea came to his mind.
Zombies were only people infected by the virus, and the virus had mutated in Ye Lian’s body. Perhaps he could find a way to cure her…
Although the chances were slim, Ling Mo wanted to try if it was possible.
As soon as the idea came to him, Ling Mo immediately controlled the puppet to stare at Ye Lian’s eyes. As Ling Mo quickly focused his consciousness, Ye Lian’s brain soon became a ball of light in his eyes.
But the color of the ball of light was different from ordinary zombies’. Because of the virus, zombies lost their consciousness and their actions were all driven by instinct. Hence, the ball of light which represented their conscious world was still and fuzzy. However, Ye Lian’s ball of consciousness was much brighter and faintly glowed red.
Why was it like this?
Ling Mo didn’t have much time to think about it right now. He attempted to focus on Ye Lian’s ball of consciousness and tried to dive deeper into it.
She was indeed different from other zombies. Ling Mo hadn’t felt any obstructions in controlling other zombies yet he felt faint resistance with Ye Lian. Although it was weak, it made Ling Mo’s heart skip a beat.
Could it be that she had regained some sort of thought? But it didn’t look like she had…
By the time Ling Mo finally took control of Ye Lian, he was drenched in cold sweat from head to toe. During this process, Ye Lian had suffocated the zombie puppet to death.
But when Ling Mo carefully made Ye Lian stand up, he felt a sudden sense of desire. The desire came from her conscious world and the target was some sort of object at the back of the zombie puppet’s head…
When he manipulated his zombie puppet, he never felt any fluctuation of emotions from him. Besides basic instinct, the zombie puppet had no wants of his own.
Ling Mo was confused and surprised when he felt this from Ye Lian. If she could feel desire after her mutation, perhaps she would be able to regain her intellect if she continued to mutate!
As he thought of this, he made Ye Lian stab into the back of the puppet’s head. Guided by her desire, Ye Lian quickly took out a small, gel-like object that looked infected.
It was like a part of the brain that was infected. It was slightly red and felt elastic like rubber in his hands.
Ling Mo studied it closely and then shoved it in Ye Lian’s mouth with disgust.
A rush of warm energy rose from her stomach and swiftly circulated throughout her whole body. Ye Lian’s exhausted body soon recharged with energy.
Ling Mo didn’t expect the disgusting gel-like thing to have this kind of effect. Perhaps Ye Lian mutated because she had ingested this type of gel…
He controlled Ye Lian and made her jump out of the bus. Once she walked back to his hiding place, Ling Mo finally met her in person.
Ling Mo was overwhelmed as he looked at her bloodstained body, pale face, and eerie eyes that were so red that they looked like they were shining. Ye Lian emitted an extremely cold aura and dangerous look, yet her familiar face dazzled Ling Mo.
Ling Mo couldn’t help but reach out for her face and wipe off the bloodstains on it. “Don’t worry, I will find a way to help you recover no matter what.”
