Chapter 33: Group of Survivors

Xia Na fainted a few times during the night and finally became stable in the morning.
Just as Ling Mo guessed, Xia Na indeed turned into a zombie but with some sanity. Compared to before, her “multipersonality” state became much better, but it was only that. Just a little better. Right now, Xia Na was still one step away from a mutated zombie but stronger than normal zombies.
Ling Mo found some patterns in the way Xia Na switched states. As long as her life wasn’t threatened, Xia Na would remain in her normal state. Although she always looked blank and rarely reacted to people, she had basic speaking skills and spoke occasionally. But if she felt like she was in danger, the remaining sanity would disappear as her instincts took over her and she turned into a zombie.
But under Ling Mo’s control, her emotional state became more stable and hence, hostility towards Liu Yuhao and Wang Cheng decreased. Because of the spiritual link with Ling Mo, it looked like she was the most familiar with Ling Mo.
For example, Xia Na was looking at Ling Mo blankly while pulling him tightly with one hand…
“Xia Na, do you recognize me?” He called Xia Na’s name over a hundred times in one night. She became more aware of her name and she would react when she heard it. However, she wasn’t incomprehensible of those words. She was in a blank state and she didn’t know what he was asking at all.
However, Xia Na showed great interest in her own sword. When Xia Na stared at the sword for a while and abruptly pulled it out of the sheath, her aura was even stronger than before.
After that, she refused to let go of the sword. Ling Mo always thought that Xia Na was in the same situation as Ye Lian and he didn’t force her to give the sword back. Having an obsession was better than becoming an insane zombie.
Xia Na’s situation made Ling Mo confident. Zombies were indeed horrifying, but the only thing that was impacting the zombies was the virus. From the current situation, Ling Mo had an idea in mind. As the virus continued to evolve, the zombies became stronger and stronger. At the same time, they grew to become monsters with conscious minds. Xia Na’s situation showed him so! She took in too much of the virus and this happened. Ye Lian also seemed to regain some consciousness after the evolution.
Unlike Liu Yuhao who felt miserable, Ling Mo was full of energy!
“Brother Ling… Xia Na, she…” Liu Yuhao didn’t dare to get too close to Xia Na at all as he could only sit far away from her and observe her actions. It wasn’t hard to tell from his expressions that he was confused and yet felt upset for Xia Na.
No humans want to turn into zombies, even if they didn’t turn into one completely…
Ling Mo looked at him deeply and said, “Rather than letting her die or turn into something like Lu Xin, don’t you think this is the most fortunate end already?”
“But…” Liu Yuhao seemed hesitant but nodded heavily. “Yes. It is better than death… At least she doesn’t show hostility to you.”
Liu Yuhao sounded bitter as he said the last sentence. Ling Mo didn’t tell him about the ability to control zombies and Liu Yuhao thought that Xia Na acted closer to Ling Mo instinctively yet had no memories of the companion that fought alongside her for so long made Liu Yuhao feel extremely gloomy.
“Uh…” Ling Mo awkwardly touched his nose and said, “Perhaps, Xia Na’s sanity will return slowly.”
“What?” Liu Yuhao was shocked and his eyes locked onto Ling Mo’s face.
Ling Mo spoke slowly, “As you saw, Xia Na is different to normal zombies. I can’t say that she’s completely sane, but she’s not completely controlled by her instincts. I’ve never seen this on any other zombies… No matter what, as long as her consciousness are not completely lost, there is hope that she will recover. But it may take a short time, or a very long time.”
Although his words were merely his assumption, Liu Yuhao’s vision became passionate.
“It’s good that there is still hope! But… Xia Na only knows you now…” After excitement, he felt down again. Right now, he couldn’t even get any closer to Xia Na, not to mention go back to how they were before.
Ling Mo was just about to say something but Wang Cheng suddenly ran in. He stopped a distance from Xia Na and exclaimed surprisingly, “There are people on the street! Survivors!”
“Survivors?”
Ling Mo followed Wang Cheng to the balcony and peaked through the curtain’s gap, discovering the survivors he was talking about.
But when he glanced at them, Ling Mo’s eyes twitched. That was not one single survivor, but an entire group of survivors!
There were about twenty young men and women with all sorts of backpacks and various weapons in their hands. It looked like they were searching for food but they were surrounded by almost twenty zombies. Ling Mo observed for a while and realized that although these people were all ordinary people, a few boys were quite skilled at fighting and they were more cruel than others.
The most noticeable thing was the way they fought against the zombies. Those young men dashed to the front and the others scattered around in groups of two or three, using cars and other objects as cover to fight the zombies. Although they weren’t strong, they looked after each other well. They couldn’t fight the zombies head-on, but they killed the rest of the zombies with teamwork.
Ling Mo couldn’t help but applaud them silently. To him, this is what a real survivor group should look like!
But they still lacked combat skills and quickly became threatened in a place filled with zombies. More and more zombies appeared from the smell of blood and rushed towards them crazily. After these people fought for a while, they backed off and eventually, they backed off into this district, heading towards the building Ling Mo and the others stayed in!
A loud bang came down underneath and it was obvious that they ran to the safety exit. But more loud bangs came from below as those zombies hit the door to the stairs crazily. From the noise, the door was going to break in a short while. If the zombies invaded the building, Ling Mo and the others were also going to be in danger!
The best choice was to hide inside without a sound, but Ling Mo felt gloomy as messy footsteps sounded outside them.
These people came up the stairs and dashed into the corridor on the second floor!
